The Lock at Pontoise – Camille Pissarro Canvas Print

Moving water at the lock

Camille Pissarro’s The Lock at Pontoise captures a riverside landscape in motion. In the foreground, bright water breaks into long white and blue-grey strokes; farther away, a barge follows the bank lined with houses. The dark wall of the lock reaches towards the centre of the composition, while tall poplars on the right balance the cloudy sky. The contrast between flowing water, architecture and vegetation gives the work a fresh energy without disturbing its harmony.

A landscape panorama that opens up the room

With its landscape format, this canvas reproduction fits naturally above a sofa, sideboard or large console table. Soft blues and greyed whites bring light to a living room, while greens, terracotta and charcoal tones work well with wood, black metal or natural textiles. In a study or dining room, the line of the bank makes the wall feel wider and gives the eye room to wander. The scene has enough detail to hold your attention without dominating the décor.

Pontoise: river, houses and poplars

Painted in 1872, The Lock at Pontoise depicts an inhabited place where nature and everyday life meet. After the bright water, the eye picks out the barges, the row of façades, small figures and the trees punctuating the horizon. The changeable sky extends the feeling of fresh air and continuous movement. Lovers of Impressionist landscapes will appreciate the scene’s depth and rhythm. The Lock at Pontoise brings a lively, elegant panorama to the wall that pairs easily with a contemporary palette.
