The Flood at Pontoise – Camille Pissarro

Chimneys reflected in floodwater

Beyond the water, a factory with red roofs and tall chimneys stands out among bare trees. Camille Pissarro’s The Flood at Pontoise sets industrial geometry against the shifting reflections in the foreground. A beige-grey sky envelops the smoke, while brown, taupe and touches of brick lend the scene a restrained intensity. The landscape remains silent, yet its verticals give it real graphic force.

An industrial landscape that gives a wall character

This horizontal composition is especially suited to a study, contemporary living room or entrance with clean lines. Earthy nuances work with leather, dark wood, black metal or a cream wall; the water lightens the whole and avoids any harshness. The canvas reproduction offers a distinctive alternative to pastoral landscapes: it preserves the depth of a horizon while adding the architectural rhythm of the chimneys.

Pontoise between nature, water and modernity

Also documented around the Saint-Ouen-l’Aumône factory, the work shows how closely Pissarro observed the transformations of his age. In The Flood at Pontoise, trees, buildings and reflections share the same space without one erasing the other. The eye returns to the smoke, follows the trunks, then rests in areas of water and sky. Hung in a restrained interior, the scene asserts a less expected Impressionist landscape: calm, structured and full of nuance.
