Young Lady in 1866 Canvas Print – Édouard Manet

A pale pink dress before a grey parrot

Dressed in a long pale pink housecoat, a young woman holds a small bouquet while a parrot observes her from its perch. The Young Lady in 1866 canvas print by Manet stretches the figure against a grey-brown background, punctuated by the table and objects on the floor. The pale fabrics, feather and profile of the bird form an elegant, strange and highly personal portrait.

Soft light for a sophisticated bedroom

The vertical format fits naturally in a bedroom, dressing room or living room with muted tones. A sage, taupe or ivory wall brings out the pinks without making them overly sweet. Pale stone, matt brass and a few powder-toned textiles extend the atmosphere. Preserving open space around the long dress and the perch emphasises the refinement of the pose and allows the secondary details to emerge gradually.

Manet's modern woman in 1866

Exhibited at the Salon of 1868 under the title Young Lady in 1866, the work combines contemporary fashion with an unusual setting. Manet paints the texture of the fabrics and the grey of the parrot without confining the sitter to an official role. The proposed canvas reproduction respects the pink passages, browns and small coloured accents. The Young Lady in 1866 canvas print by Manet offers a refined, independent femininity far removed from conventional portraiture. The parrot adds a lively presence and turns the pose into an open scene rather than a simple likeness.
