The Rue Mosnier with Flags Canvas Print – Édouard Manet

Tricolour flags in a street flooded with light

A pale avenue descends between the façades, punctuated by French flags fluttering above a few passers-by. Manet's The Rue Mosnier with Flags canvas print arranges blues, whites and reds in an almost powdery light. The elevated viewpoint, dark carriage and widely spaced figures make the city a luminous, dynamic and surprisingly airy setting.

A bright perspective that opens up the living room

The horizontal canvas visually enlarges a living room, study or entrance hall. A sand or pearl-grey wall extends the façades, while a smoky blue background intensifies the small flags. Pale wood, black metal and ecru textiles complement its urban modernity. Opposite a low sideboard, the diagonal of the roadway draws the eye into the distance and gives depth even to a narrow room.

Paris in celebration in 1878

Painted in 1878, the scene evokes the decorated streets of Paris during celebrations held in that year of the Universal Exhibition. Manet observes the event from a window and captures not so much the ceremony as the visual transformation of the city. The canvas reproduction recreates the brightness of the avenue and the tricolour accents. The Rue Mosnier with Flags canvas print by Manet becomes a festive, elegant and spacious view of Paris that is easy to place. Finally, the small red touches guide the eye along the buildings and maintain a gentle sense of movement throughout the perspective.
