Description

Three trunks open onto a secret clearing

Cézanne’s Pool at Jas de Bouffan places the eye beneath tall trees with deep foliage. Their trunks cross the entire scene, forming a natural threshold before the pool, its low fountain and balustrade. Farther back, a pale house appears between the branches: this succession of planes gives the garden peaceful depth, as though one had left the heat of Aix-en-Provence to enter shade.

Blue-green tones, violet browns and a few ochre glimmers form a cool harmony. The visible strokes fix nothing in place: they make the air vibrate around the discreet fountain, suggest the foliage and the light filtering down to the ground. Painted around 1885–1886, this view reveals an intimate Jas de Bouffan, far from the bright Provençal landscape one might expect.

Plant-filled depth to structure a living room

In an interior, this horizontal canvas creates an opening rather than a simple touch of colour. Hung behind a living room’s main seating, the trees balance a broad wall while the pool gently holds the eye; a sideboard or low desk can also provide a fitting anchor. An off-white, stone beige or sage-green setting will extend its nuances without darkening the room.

Medium-toned wood, ecru linen and matte ceramics respond to it naturally. In a living room, it provides a visual refuge; in a study, its stable construction encourages a composed atmosphere. The deep greens punctuated with greyed lavender have enough presence to animate the décor without imposing a strident colour.

The shaded calm of Jas de Bouffan

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York holds the reference painting. This canvas reproduction reveals how Cézanne’s Pool at Jas de Bouffan builds space through coloured masses. Its intimate perspective invites a long look at the passages between shade, water and house. Choose it to give a room a cultivated, vegetal breathing space with a lasting sense of calm.
