Still Life with Three Puppies – Paul Gauguin Canvas Print

Three puppies and blue cups on Gauguin’s table

Paul Gauguin’s Still Life with Three Puppies, reproduced as a print on canvas, combines the stillness of objects with the liveliness of a small domestic scene. At the top of the picture, the puppies lean around a saucepan. Lower down, three deep blue cups cross the composition diagonally, while apples and pears occupy the foreground.

The pale tablecloth, patterned in blue-green, connects these different groups without merging them. The dark outlines of the animals echo those of the cups and fruit; orange touches provide small warm accents. The vertical format encourages the eye to travel down the scene and then return to the puppies. This arrangement gives familiar objects an unexpected liveliness.

A kitchen scene for a welcoming interior

In a kitchen with pale cabinet fronts, the blue of the cups can echo a few bowls or pieces of old crockery. The cream-toned tablecloth sits equally well with pale wood or an ivory wall. This picture offers a subject that is both everyday and distinctive: the fruit establishes a still life, while the small dogs give it an amusing presence without turning it into a children’s illustration.

Paul Gauguin’s Still Life with Three Puppies also finds its place in a dining room, beside a dresser or on a stretch of wall between two openings. Its light tones let the decor breathe, while the blue shapes give it structure. A few restrained objects around the canvas allow the diagonal line of cups and the interplay of silhouettes to remain clear.

A still life from 1888 with an independent eye

Held at MoMA in New York, the work from 1888 was painted on wood. The reproduction offered here is a print on canvas, rather than the original painting. It is for admirers of Gauguin who prefer an intimate scene to a landscape or portrait: a corner of a table where the ordinary becomes a composition full of character.
