Still Life with Peaches and Grapes – Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Rosy peaches and blue faience in perfect balance

Against a deep blue background, Renoir’s Still Life with Peaches and Grapes brings together a velvety pyramid of fruit in a white jardinière adorned with blue. The peaches blend pink, cream and red beneath a few green leaves. To the right, clusters of green and purple grapes cascade over a pale cloth, leaving ample blue background to breathe around them. This asymmetry lends the composition a sense of movement. The contrast between the delicate faience and the generous fruit creates an image that is fresh, inviting and refined.

A fruity freshness to enhance mealtimes

In a white kitchen, cobalt-blue ceramics naturally echo the jardinière, adding depth to light surfaces. Above a pale-wood sideboard, the painted cloth softens the volumes while the peaches introduce a warm rosy glow. The canvas also fits beautifully in a muted-blue living room, where it becomes a calm, easy-to-match colour accent. Its horizontal format suits low furniture and lets the grape clusters guide the eye across the full width without overpowering the space.

At Wargemont in 1881, fruit becomes décor

The Met’s catalogue places this 1881 work at Wargemont, in the home of patron Paul Bérard. The faience jardinière belonged to the family and lends the arrangement a more personal presence than a simple fruit display. Opting for a canvas reproduction preserves the luminous blue background, the vessel’s motifs and the variety of grapes. Renoir’s Still Life with Peaches and Grapes will appeal to collectors of Impressionism who seek a welcoming still life, precise in its details and bright enough to accompany shared moments around a table.
