Reading, The Green Parasol – Berthe Morisot Canvas Print

A reader in a pale dress among the greens

With Berthe Morisot’s Reading, offered as a printed canvas reproduction, a pause outdoors finds its place at home. Bent over her book, a young woman stands out against the grass through the brightness of her dress. Her green-ribboned hat and the folds of fabric connect her figure to the landscape. A fan resting on the right and the parasol visible on the left extend this moment of rest.

The deep greens of the meadow occupy much of the image without becoming a uniform backdrop. They mingle with browns and the paler tones of distant fields. In the foreground, the dress gathers touches of pink, blue and grey. The open book becomes the focus of quiet attention, while the viewer’s eye can wander towards the path and horizon.

The Green Parasol brings calm to a reading corner

Beside a bookcase or armchair, this Impressionist scene gives the setting a purpose: to sit, read and take your time. The horizontal format works with a low desk or long shelf. Pair it with ivory walls, natural fabric and honey-coloured wood; the dress keeps its brightness while the greens add depth.

Berthe Morisot’s Reading also suits a bedroom where you want to bring in nature without choosing an uninhabited landscape. The reader’s presence makes the room welcoming. Avoid too many small patterns around it: dress, blanket and grasses already offer a variety of details to explore.

Berthe Morisot’s open-air light

Also known as The Green Parasol, this work from 1873 is held at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The free brushwork preserves both the act of reading and the contrast between pale clothing and meadow. This canvas reproduction appeals to lovers of outdoor portraits who prefer a reflective atmosphere to a lively scene. On the wall, it retains the feeling of an afternoon with no need to hurry.
