Monkey Frieze – Franz Marc

Monkeys racing through pink and turquoise

Elongated monkeys cross a sequence of pink, white, green and turquoise facets. Franz Marc’s Monkey Frieze turns their bodies into long diagonals that seem to leap from one edge to the other. The silhouettes remain visible, but their repetition above all creates a lively, almost musical graphic rhythm.

A horizontal rhythm to enliven a broad wall

Above a sofa, table or low cabinet, this horizontal composition full of momentum immediately brings movement to the wall. Pink works with terracotta or warm wood, while green and turquoise freshen the whole. In a creative office, the work stimulates without becoming confusing; in a dining room, it adds a playful touch of artistic character that invites a closer look.

Repetition turns animals into a frieze

Dated 1911, the frieze rests on a simple, powerful idea: circulating the same subject through changing colours. The monkeys become animals, lines and luminous accents by turns. Franz Marc’s Monkey Frieze suits those seeking animal art far from the classic portrait. A joyful, highly modern reproduction able to make an impact on a broad wall while retaining a sense of lightness.
