Little Mountain Goats – Franz Marc

Goats hidden in a mountain of colour

Little goats appear among green, yellow, blue and red facets rising through the composition. Franz Marc’s Little Mountain Goats asks for a moment of observation: the eye first follows the diagonals, then recognises the animals nestled in this coloured relief. This gradual discovery gives the work a playful charm and a very modern energy.

A vivid vertical to bring height

The vertical format with rising lines enhances a narrow stretch of wall, an entrance hall or the space between two pieces of furniture. In a study, the geometric forms bring rhythm; in a living room, they create a lively counterpoint to restrained materials. The dominant greens make it easy to pair with wood and plants, while the yellow and red accents enliven the whole without taking over the room.

The pleasure of finding the subject in the forms

Dated 1914, the work almost erases the separation between the goats and the mountain. The fragmented contours suggest a world in which the subject is constructed with its surroundings. Franz Marc’s Little Mountain Goats is therefore suited to those who enjoy looking at an image for a long time and finding new forms in it. A singular vertical reproduction, at once animal, abstract and surprisingly light.
