White dresses cross the shade of the trees

Between the shade of the trees and pale dresses, August Macke’s Girls Beneath the Trees makes a walk in a park vibrate. At left, several young women in white and blue dresses move among the trunks. At right, two closer figures bring red, violet and blue together around a broad pale hat. Between the groups, a yellow and green opening lets the light circulate. The faces remain simplified, yet the attitudes and colours are enough to evoke an animated scene in the freshness of dark foliage.

A luminous clearing to enlarge the living room

The horizontal format stretches the scene and gives the wall the sense of an opening onto a park. In a cream or grey living room, the whites and blues stand out clearly against the deep greens. A bedroom can echo the soft violet and red touches in cushions or bed linen. In an entrance hall, the silhouettes naturally lead the eye from one side to the other. The painting also works with dark wood, rattan and ecru textiles, which extend the atmosphere of a walk without competing with the palette.

The trunks link shade and pale dresses

The black trunks divide the scene without separating the groups: they guide the eye from the blue and white figures at left to the red and violet figures at right. Between them, yellow openings give the pale garments all their presence. In this 1914 work, the landscape acts as much as a framework as a setting. On the canvas reproduction, contrasts remain intense without erasing the softer passages.
