Description

A decorated jar takes centre stage

Cézanne’s painting of a ginger jar and aubergines gathers a wealth of objects around a clear focal point. A round vessel decorated with golden lines catches the eye first; a tall green pot and a dark bottle rise behind it. A melon, colourful fruit and three hanging aubergines extend this layered arrangement of forms.

Around the vessels, the fabrics are almost as prominent as the objects themselves. Blue patterned cloth folds into powerful waves, while a pale drape falls away to the right. Painted in 1893–1894, the scene plays with a deliberately shifting perspective: the table seems tilted, yet the repeated curves hold the volumes together. This tension gives the still life a concentrated, distinctly modern energy.

Petrol blue and emerald green on a generous scale

Deep blues mingled with celadon envelop the composition, illuminated by the green of the tall pot and the yellow fruit. Against an off-white wall, the contrast brings out each object. Midnight blue or deep green creates a more intimate setting, ideal alongside dark wood, aged brass or simple ceramics.

Opposite a dining-room sideboard, this landscape-format canvas immediately makes its rich detail felt. In a pared-back living room, its painterly richness anchors the décor without needing other patterns nearby. Larger sizes are particularly well suited to the sweeping drapery and the sculptural presence of the central jar.

A carefully balanced abundance for the dining room

The original painting is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Reproduced on canvas, Cézanne’s ginger jar and aubergines appeal as much through their abundance as through the composition’s structure. The hanging aubergines, the bottle, the melon and the fruit nestled in the folds reveal themselves in turn. This gradual discovery keeps the image from feeling static. It is an expressive choice for a room where you entertain, bringing a thoughtful, warm and distinctive atmosphere.
