The Garden in Munich by Raoul Dufy – Canvas Print

A green garden rises like a tapestry

Amid a tangle of foliage, Raoul Dufy’s The Garden in Munich layers trees, flower beds and architectural forms all the way to the top of the canvas. Deep greens alternate with areas of turquoise, olive and acid yellow. At the centre, darker plant silhouettes give the garden an almost monumental rhythm. The brushwork remains visible and generous, yet the composition never becomes confused: the blocks of colour interlock vertically, leading the eye from the undergrowth towards the light in the sky.

A vertical garden to enliven a narrow wall

The slender format sits naturally between two windows, beside a bookcase or above a narrow console table. In a bedroom with natural-toned textiles, its greens create an enveloping atmosphere; in a blue-grey hallway, they offer a lively welcome without closing in the space. A few emerald ceramic or aged-brass accessories are enough to extend the palette. Thanks to its balance of depth and decorative pattern, the work suits both a bohemian interior and a pared-back contemporary setting.

Munich, 1909–1910: colour structures the landscape

Painted in 1909–1910, this garden belongs to a period when Dufy was moving away from pure Fauvist brilliance to create more structured landscapes. The trunks and foliage become almost sign-like, while the architecture merges into the vegetation. This passage between observed nature and decorative organisation makes the scene feel strikingly modern. The canvas reproduction preserves the density of the greens and the orange accents in the foreground. Raoul Dufy’s The Garden in Munich offers a powerful botanical presence—more graphic than a traditional landscape, yet always warm.
