Black and white ink-wash portrait poster – Silence

The lowered eyes first lead towards the face, then towards the areas of diffuse ink around the hair and clothing. A pale cheek stands out from the layered greys. This black and white watercolour-effect portrait poster favours washes and areas left light over a closed outline around every detail.

Greys that give the face room to breathe

The face turns three-quarters towards the left. The short hair looks slightly tousled, one ear remains visible and the black collar extends towards the bottom of the frame. Around these clear features, some shadows dissolve into the silver-grey background. The contrast between the finely defined mouth and the freer edges gives the image its own rhythm.

The top of the hair and the shoulders are cropped, but no important facial feature is lost. The off-white areas act as small sources of light. The appearance evokes watercolour or an ink wash; this describes the drawing's look, without promising an original painting on paper.

A monochrome image that keeps the room alive

Above a bedroom chest of drawers, this portrait can accompany pale textiles without creating an overly loud focal point. Near a bookcase, its deep blacks echo dark bindings, while the greys soften the whole. In a colourful living room, it instead offers a visual pause between several strong shades.

The lowered gaze invites a more intimate reading than the face-to-face encounter of a frontal portrait. The free contours and areas left light lend it a quiet quality that continues to reveal itself up close.
