A tree stands at the centre of Antibes (1918), its leaves shifting between water green and sunlit yellow. Branches stretch in front of lightly sketched façades, shutters and roofs; pale blue sky leaves large bright spaces. Drawn outlines remain visible through the colour washes, lending the buildings and passers-by a sense of immediacy. The street is suggested rather than exhaustively described: the eye catches its light, the movement of foliage and the warmth of a southern town.

Gentle Mediterranean colour around the table

In a dining room, the soft blue, green and yellow palette sits well with light wood, ceramics and natural fabric. In a sitting room the unfilled spaces keep an already furnished wall open; near a desk the loose drawing gives the eye a pleasant place to rest. Sand tones and matte materials suit the view, though the central tree can also bring light to a more contemporary setting. Signac’s original is a watercolour, with visible line work and translucent washes.
