The eye is closed, yet the whole image seems to move. This colour abstract face with black-and-white stripes on an orange background balances the calm of an upturned profile with an almost hypnotic graphic rhythm. The waves follow the cheek; the warm halo spreads before the forehead and gives the wall an immediate pulse.

Waves follow every curve of the profile

The face occupies the centre and right side of the canvas. Black-and-white stripes wrap around the closed eye, lips and ear before joining a broad black mass. Their undulating line shapes the abstract portrait without realistic shading and creates a continuous optical effect, as though the surface were breathing with the lines.

On the left, concentric red, yellow and orange curves radiate around the nose and forehead. This orange background does more than provide contrast: it draws the eye towards the profile, then sends it back to the monochrome bands.
