The Hungry Lion Throws Itself on the Antelope – Henri Rousseau Canvas Print

Henri Rousseau’s jungle, a theatre of foliage

This canvas reproduction of Henri Rousseau’s The Hungry Lion draws the eye into a jungle of deep greens. The lion seizes an antelope at the centre of the composition. Around this hunting scene, the vegetation unfolds in long leaves, curved branches and fine grasses; a panther and birds appear among the trees.

The full title, The Hungry Lion Throws Itself on the Antelope, announces a powerful subject. The prey’s red wounds echo the red sun, while olive and brown tones surround the animals. This is no peaceful scene: its appeal comes from the meeting of an imagined natural world and the tension of the hunt. Le Douanier Rousseau gives the foliage an almost ornamental design, characteristic of his naïve art.

Deep greens for a living room with character

On an uncluttered wall, the horizontal composition sits well above a low sofa or a dark wooden sideboard. Olive fabric, a brown chair or a lamp with simple lines can echo its palette without competing with the scene. Keep neighbouring patterns understated: part of the pleasure of this composition lies in the animals discovered among the leaves after the first glance.

A study or library can also welcome this dense botanical presence, for an art lover who prefers a narrative image to neutral decoration. Henri Rousseau’s The Hungry Lion is chosen for its intensity and its hidden wildlife, rather than a childlike atmosphere. Our selection of animal canvas prints offers other encounters with the wild; here, every turn of the eye leads back to Rousseau’s singular world.
