Description

The Barque of Dante brings Dante and Virgil together amid dark water, while bodies cling to their boat. In the background, the burning city reddens the sky; in the foreground, illuminated flesh stands out against almost black waves. This canvas reproduction presents the dramatic composition painted by Eugène Delacroix in 1822.

Dante and Virgil at the heart of a turbulent scene

The eye first moves towards the two figures standing in the barque. Dante, recognisable by his red clothing, turns towards the shore; Virgil stands beside him. Around the boat, the figures in the water seek a handhold. Their gestures, the reflections and the direction of the waves create a tension prolonged by the distant light.

The original work also bears the title Dante and Virgil and is held at the Musée du Louvre. Delacroix painted it in oil on canvas; the picture sold here is a print on canvas, rather than an original painting or a hand-painted copy.

A Delacroix reproduction for a wall with presence

The blacks, browns and reds of The Barque of Dante bring depth to a pale wall. The horizontal format accompanies a library, study or living room where the scene has room to unfold. From a distance, the barque and the city’s light structure the image; close up, the figures and movements of the water take over.

Five sizes, from 41 × 31 cm to 122 × 81 cm, are offered. The choice can be guided by the width of the wall and the viewing distance without changing the reproduced subject. For ideas about placing a picture in another room, see our bedroom decorating ideas too.
