Selling Melons – Joaquín Sorolla Canvas Print

Melons, baskets and ceramics in a Spanish courtyard

Sorolla’s Selling Melons invites the viewer into a lively Spanish courtyard. This canvas reproduction gathers figures around baskets of fruit, beneath vegetation that trails along pale walls. Blue ceramics, red fabrics and yellow cloth punctuate this genre scene, while a few ducks occupy the lower part of the picture discreetly.

In this work from 1890, Joaquín Sorolla pays as much attention to the exchange between the figures as to their surroundings. The eye moves from a glance to a cut-open melon, from an ornate grille to a pattern of tiles. The white wall unites this wealth of detail and gives the colours room to breathe. Together, they evoke the pleasure of a lived-in place where everyday objects have stories of their own.

The warmth of a patio for the dining room

A dining room provides a fitting setting for this horizontal composition. Above a sideboard, it accompanies a wooden table and blue crockery without becoming merely a picture of fruit. The figures and their gestures give it warmth: the eye returns as to a conversation in which a new detail emerges each time.

Sorolla’s Selling Melons also suits a welcoming kitchen, on a wall away from splashes. Cream tones echo the façades, while a terracotta pot or woven basket responds to the materials depicted. There is no need for numerous accessories: the picture already brings together a rich variety of shapes and colours.

Choose a position where the scene can be viewed both close up and from a distance. In this narrative picture, the red fabrics and blue tiles lead the eye from one group to the next. Even the ducks at the foot of the wall contribute to the life of the courtyard.
