Self-Portrait with Halo – Paul Gauguin Canvas Print

A golden halo amid Gauguin’s red

Paul Gauguin’s Self-Portrait with Halo, offered as a printed reproduction on canvas, gives the portrait a distinctive presence. Against an orange-red background, the painter’s face appears between suspended apples and the curves of a green snake. The lightly drawn halo floats above his dark hair. The bright yellow at the bottom of the composition brings out the hands and extends the warmth of the background.

The colours do not try to blend together. They answer one another through contrasts, with the deep green of the fruit and sinuous lines facing the reds and yellows. The sideways gaze and closed mouth give the figure an enigmatic expression. From a distance, the strength of the flat colours stands out; closer in, the eye follows the contours of the face, the marks in the hair and the signs scattered around him.

A Symbolist portrait for a living room with character

This vertical portrait by Gauguin finds its place beside an armchair, above a narrow piece of furniture or on a study wall. An off-white background lets the colours assert themselves; dark wood or a few deep green elements accompany the snake and apples without multiplying the accents. In a living room with neutral tones, this canvas reproduction concentrates colour in one precise spot.

Paul Gauguin’s Self-Portrait with Halo also suits an entrance hall where you wish to express a taste for expressive portraits. Its composition can be read at a glance, then its details arouse curiosity. It can sit alongside a small bookcase or a ceramic object, with an uncluttered stretch of wall around it.

The 1889 self-portrait, between colour and mystery

Created in 1889, the work is held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington. The combination of portrait, halo, snake and fruit gives it a Symbolist dimension that each viewer can approach in their own way. This canvas is for those who enjoy a personal interior, enriched by painting and questions rather than purely illustrative motifs.
