Before a blue-grey wall, Paul Cézanne’s Harlequin presents a single full-length figure, set slightly off centre. The red and black costume alternates large diamonds across the torso and crossed legs. A white headdress brightens the face, while a wooden sword runs diagonally beneath the arm. The artist’s son is the model here. His upright pose, averted gaze and the broad, almost empty background give the character an unexpected gravity, far from the bustle usually associated with theatre.
