Pierre-Auguste Renoir exhibited this painting at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874. The model was probably actress Henriette Henriot, though the identification is not held to be absolutely certain. What remains undeniable is the dialogue between the academic pose and luminous paint, freer in the tutu and background. On this canvas reproduction, the gaze, ribbons, slippers and soft colour transitions remain present. Renoir’s The Dancer offers a refined alternative to more animated ballet scenes: a calm, vertical portrait immediately suggestive of movement.
