At the Races in the Countryside – Edgar Degas

A carriage in the foreground of the racecourse

At the edge of the meadow, the black carriage and its horse anchor an open landscape where the sky retains its full expanse. The painting At the Races in the Countryside by Degas features a carriage and its brown horse at the edge of a vast racecourse. Beneath a light parasol, the passengers watch the jockeys and small groups scattered across the meadow. The sky occupies much of the composition, casting a soft, fresh light. Between the black of the carriage, the green of the field, and the pale blue, the scene exudes the elegance of a leisurely outdoor excursion.

A bright horizon to open up the room

The panoramic width visually expands a living room or dining area. It complements walls in soft grey-blue, muted almond green, or off-white, as well as brown leather and natural wood tones. The horse and carriage provide a dark focal point that steadies the luminous horizon. When hung on a large wall, the expansive sky creates a sense of airiness, especially welcome in smaller or shallower spaces.

The world of racing as seen in 1869

Painted in 1869, this work belongs to Degas’s early equestrian scenes. The artist does not focus solely on speed; he captures the spectators, the horses at rest, and the social dynamics of the event. This canvas reproduction preserves the bright landscape and the finely detailed carriage. The painting At the Races in the Countryside by Degas offers a refined and tranquil sporting vision, distinct from the more dramatic galloping scenes already available on the site.
