A Centennial of Independence – Henri Rousseau Canvas Print

Dancers and flags in Rousseau’s naïve art

This reproduction of Henri Rousseau’s A Centennial of Independence, printed on canvas, brings a circle of dancers into the room. Hands join, legs lift and colourful dresses follow the movement. Beneath the turquoise sky, a large tree spreads its branches above the flags and garlands that set the rhythm of the whole scene.

Yellow, orange, red and blue alternate from one figure to the next. On the left, musicians join the festivities; on the right, figures in formal dress provide a counterpoint to the farandole. Le Douanier Rousseau brings these very different poses together without losing the collective momentum. Strong outlines and flattened space give this popular celebration the visual directness of naïve art.

Painted in 1892 and held at the J. Paul Getty Museum, the work celebrates the centenary of the proclamation of the First French Republic in 1792. This republican memory takes the form of a living image: vegetation, decorations and costumes seem to join the dancers. The historical title does not prevent an immediate response, led first by colour and gesture.

A republican celebration enlivens the living room and dining room

With its horizontal composition, the scene sits comfortably above a sideboard or on a wide wall near the table. Natural wood relates to the warm tones of the clothing; a turquoise object or yellow textile is enough to echo its palette. Plain walls let the flags and numerous figures remain clear without competition.

This reproduction of Henri Rousseau’s A Centennial of Independence suits those looking for an image of people coming together rather than a tranquil landscape. In the dining room, the circle of dancers visually extends the idea of reunion; in the living room, it brings colourful activity. Keep nearby objects fairly restrained and let this celebration hold the eye.
