Leonardo da Vinci: Life, Inventions and Masterpieces
On one sheet Leonardo draws a whirlpool; on another, curling hair. The movements resemble one another. For him this is not a decorative comparison but a research method. Painting, anatomy, mechanics and clouds belong to the same question: how does the world take form, and how can drawing follow its movement?

In brief: Leonardo da Vinci was born near Vinci in 1452 and died at Amboise in 1519. Trained in Verrocchio’s workshop, he worked in Florence, Milan, Rome and France. Fewer than twenty paintings are generally accepted, including the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, but thousands of drawings and notes survive. His celebrated machines were primarily projects and studies, not modern inventions already made operational.

What was Leonardo’s real name?
He was born Lionardo di ser Piero da Vinci. “Da Vinci” means “from Vinci”; it is an indication of origin rather than a modern surname. His birth outside marriage probably closed some traditional university paths, but it did not exclude him from Florentine society.
Florence: learning how forms emerge
Verrocchio’s Renaissance workshop was not a narrowly specialised classroom. Pupils drew, ground colours, modelled volumes, designed decorations and contributed to collective commissions. Leonardo absorbed relief, chiaroscuro and movement. Early works such as the Annunciation show close observation of plants, drapery and atmosphere; the unfinished Adoration of the Magi exposes a method in which relationships emerge before contours are fixed.
Milan: painter, organiser and engineer
Leonardo offered Ludovico Sforza military engineering, architecture, sculpture and painting. At court he devised festivals, stage machinery and an immense equestrian monument that was never cast. In the Virgin of the Rocks, hands and glances form a circulating network inside an ancient, humid landscape. In The Last Supper, the apostles react in groups of three as perspective converges on Christ. Leonardo’s experimental dry-wall technique allowed slow refinement but deteriorated rapidly.
The “science of painting”
Leonardo did not study anatomy, light, water and botany beside painting; he studied them because painting life required understanding relationships. Sfumato grows from that investigation. Thin oil layers move from shadow to light without a rigid edge, so forms seem to appear within atmosphere rather than being cut out and coloured.

Anatomical drawings
Leonardo began anatomy to improve the painted body, then pursued it as an independent investigation. His sheets combine multiple views, sections, details and notes. Spine, skull, heart, muscles and foetus are rendered with extraordinary explanatory ambition. Some conclusions remained wrong or tied to ancient medicine; their modernity lies less in infallibility than in joining observation, hand and visual demonstration. Because the planned treatise was never published, the work had limited direct influence on contemporary medicine.

What did Leonardo invent?
The notebooks contain flying devices, hydraulic systems, gears, construction machines, weapons and stage equipment. The aerial screw, ornithopters, pyramidal parachute, armoured vehicle and portable bridges are famous. The word “invention” requires care: Leonardo did not build a working helicopter or tank centuries ahead of his time. Many sheets test known technologies or solutions impossible with available materials and power. Their achievement is to decompose motion, represent forces and make alternatives thinkable on paper.
Mirror writing and notebooks
Leonardo often wrote from right to left, probably a comfortable habit for a left-handed writer avoiding wet ink—not proof that every note was secret. The surviving pages mix lists, calculations, observations and reminders. After his death Francesco Melzi tried to organise them, but the corpus was dispersed. Major groups are now held by the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, the Royal Collection, the Institut de France and British institutions.
From Florence to Amboise
After the Sforza fall in 1499, Leonardo travelled. He mapped Imola for Cesare Borgia, returned to Florence for the unfinished Battle of Anghiari, worked again in Milan and stayed in Rome. In 1516 he accepted Francis I’s invitation to France and settled at the Clos Lucé near Amboise, bringing paintings including the Mona Lisa, Saint Anne and Saint John the Baptist.
How did Leonardo die?
He died on 2 May 1519, aged 67. The exact cause is undocumented. A report of paralysis in his right arm in 1517 may suggest a stroke, but remains a hypothesis. The story that Francis I held him as he died belongs to later legend, not established fact.

His originality lives in the passages between fields: a muscle becomes a problem of movement, a river a system, a shadow a volume and a sheet of paper a laboratory. Place a painted lock of hair beside one of his whirlpools. There is no hidden code—only a mind unwilling to leave phenomena in separate boxes.
