Young Woman with Ibis – Edgar Degas Canvas Artwork

Two scarlet ibises beside a turquoise gown

Against a coral ground, the turquoise drapery and two scarlet birds create an apparition as arresting as it is regal. The Degas Young Woman with Ibis canvas pairs a turquoise-clad figure with two large red ibises. The young woman turns her head and lifts a hand to her throat while the birds frame her face with their curved beaks. The warm, almost mineral background sharpens the contrast with the gown. The composition possesses a rare decorative intensity in the artist’s œuvre, at once exotic and solemn.

A vibrant palette for a confident wall

This vertical canvas readily becomes the centrepiece of an entryway or sitting room. On a terracotta wall it forms an enveloping harmony; on midnight blue the birds acquire luminous depth. Deep green velvet, dark timber and a few red glass pieces extend its palette without mimicry. Preserving clear space around the turquoise portrait and the ibises ensures the contrast remains fully potent.

A reworked early canvas by Degas

Begun in 1857–1858 and revised around 1860–1862, the work belongs to Degas’s early investigations. Its frontal construction and bold hues distinguish it from his later ballet or café scenes. The canvas reproduction renders the dialogue between red, teal and shadowed passages legible. The Degas Young Woman with Ibis canvas appeals to those who desire an original and majestic statement while retaining the hallmark of a master.
