Trees and Houses near Jas de Bouffan – Paul Cézanne

The bare branches become a horizon line

Cézanne’s painting *Trees and Houses near Jas de Bouffan* reveals a Provençal hamlet behind a network of bare branches. Trunks intersect, lean, and slice the blue-grey sky; between them, ochre façades and brick roofs emerge with restraint. The eye moves line by line before reaching the houses, set above a golden terrain.

This 1885–1886 view avoids the spectacular. Paul Cézanne constructs a silent landscape with firm contours, warm masses, and touches of moss green. The ambiguous season, soft light, and absence of figures lend it a contemplative quality. The motif remains alive thanks to the almost graphic rhythm of the trees, which animates the entire width without breaking the calm.

Soft ochres on a luminous wall

The palette of beige, muted blue, and brown blends effortlessly into interiors rich in natural materials. On a warm white or greige wall, the stone-coloured house catches the light; near an olive green, the vegetal notes become more pronounced. A setting of light wood, bouclé wool, or linen elegantly extends its rustic spirit.

This panoramic format finds its place above a low bookshelf, in a quiet study, or on the main wall of a living room. It brings warmth without overwhelming the space. In a bedroom with muted tones, its powder blues and golden earths create a restful atmosphere.

A silent Provence to contemplate

The original is part of the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This canvas reproduction preserves the unique character of the view captured south of Jas de Bouffan, the family home near Aix-en-Provence. The painting *Trees and Houses near Jas de Bouffan* by Cézanne unfolds gradually: first the bare trees, then the light ground, finally the buildings. This composition in successive planes appeals to those seeking a cultivated, warm, and less predictable Provençal landscape.
